Artifacts Recovered From World War One
This picture shows Edward V. Rickenbacker in 94th Aero Squadron.Having finished gunnery school, Rickenbacker became assigned to the 94th Aero Squadron. In February, he and several different pilots traveled to Paris to fly their new Nieuport 28s returned to Villeneuve. However, a snow typhoon delayed their return, and Rickenbacker used a number of the extra time to start a diary. His first entry was on Saturday, March 2, 1917,
this marks the beginning of an account that would continue past the Armistice, providing a first-hand account from the man who would become America's "Ace of Aces". This is a important artifacts to WWI because its shows one more important pilots in the war and it also shows how technology has advanced because now a days, our planes are more advanced and efficient. |
This pictures shows a device that was used during WWI, it was called gas alarm rattle. This device would produce a loud, distinctive noise to warn of a gas attack. Soldiers had to put on respirators rapidly in order to avoid dying or chemical burns. The rattle presented a higher solution, because it was lightweight, transportable and had a simple, less expensive design. There used to be some fear that sound of the gas alarm rattle might be confused for machine-gun fire and ignored. However the troops were a able to distinctively tell the difference between the two. This is important artifact of the war because it shows the technology that was used and it also shows us how much our technology has improved since the first world war.
This pictures shows one of the close ranged weapons that was used during WWI, this weapon was called the push dagger. This dagger was made to be used in a punching motion, some variations had a pommel spike to allow a downward strike. Many were at first blackened to be inconspicuous at night. Although the small tang making the blade accountable to break, this remained one of the most popular private purchase daggers amongst British troops. This is a important part of history because it shows what kinda of close ranged weapons were used in WWI and how they have advanced since then.
This is image of one of the more popular guns used in the world war, it was called the Lewis gun light machine gun. The gun was one of the more popular ones because it was lighter, weighing 26 lbs, and more mobile and could better support the infantry in attack than the heavier Vickers guns. However with it being more convenient then other guns that meant it was also more expensive, costing £165. This is important to history because it shows how our weapons have come along way since the first world war. It also shows us how soldiers would protect the country and what weapons they would use to do so.
This pictures shows the the medicine used in the first world war, this device was called a ether dispenser. The ether dispenser was a colorless and highly flammable anesthetic used to control pain. This device was mainly used when troops were about to be undergoing operations in causality clearing stations. However the ether could also be used as a treatment for aliments such as scurvy or pulmonary inflammations. This is an important part of history because its shows how far we've come in medicine and technology, now we have easier and more efficient way to provide anesthetic in the war zone.
